The value of slowing down…
Some of the sailors that we financially support are lucky enough to embark on a voyage on The Blue Mermaid with Sea-Change Sailing Trust based in Maldon, Essex. These voyages are undertaken on this traditional Thames sailing barge and usually takes our sailors up and down the waters of the Thames estuary.
It’s always wonderful to hear their stories as they disembark but this article from journalist Imogen Lepere who has recently sailed on another Thames sailing barge: Centaur, a boat built in 1895 and owned by the Thames Sailing Barge Trust gives a lovely insight into what these amazing vessels can do for us. Some of her quotes come from fellow sailor, Chris Martin from Circles Alternative Education who explained:
“Sailing barges may not be able to teach us much about cargo any more, but they can teach us the value of slowing down, doing things with our hands and spending time in nature.”
